WHALE, WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?
Anytime’s a good time! There’s no “whale calendar” in Mauritius. Fun fact: a family of 38 sperm whales calls our waters home.
WHICH WHALE BUDDIES WILL I SEE?
Primarily, the elusive sperm whales. But on any given day, you might also spot orcas, pilot whales, dolphins, beaked whales, and both short and long-beaked common dolphins. Between June to October, the humpback whales vacation here from the Antarctic’s chillier neighborhoods, making it a fab time to play peeping Tom.
IS WHALE WATCHING SAFE?
Absolutely! As long as we all play by the rules. A full briefing is done onboard – and remember, we’re watching, no swimming, with these giant fish. Dolphins, on the other hand? Jump right in!
WHAT’S THE WHOLE DEAL?
The trip spans 3-4 hours. We have a hydrophone on one of our boats to track down our whale friends. And we’re always in touch with our boat buddies in other spots. If one finds a whale, we head over. If we first encounter dolphins near Black River, we can dive in and splash around. Then, it’s whale watching time! But it’s always your choice – continue gazing at the majestic whales or swim with the playful dolphins. The ocean’s the limit!
Remember, this adventure is about enjoying the majesty of the whales from our boat. As for the dolphins? Dive right in! 🐬🌊🐋
GUARANTEES? (EVERYONE’S FAVORITE QUESTION)
While we’d love to pinky-promise a whale meet-and-greet, Mother Nature’s got her own plans! But, hey, our track record of finding them is over 90%. We promise to pull out all the stops to play ‘find the whale’!
DO WE NEED MASKS AND FINS?
We’ve got you covered on board. But if you have your own snorkeling superhero gear, bring it along. Because, you know, what’s yours is… well, just better!
WHAT TO BRING ALONG
Some local cash to tip the captain (typically 5-10% of the trip cost) – think of it as their applause meter.
Sunblock SPF 50+ because nobody likes a roasted tourist.
Headgear – be it a cap or a stylish Panama.
A windbreaker, rashguard, and towel. Always be prepared!
If you’re bringing young adventurers, pack some light snacks – because “I’m hungry” is a universal kiddo phrase.
SEASICKNESS
If you’re the type who gets into a tango with seasickness, gear up beforehand with the right meds. The boat’s all out of “don’t-get-sick” pills. So, better safe than sorry, right?
